I have been a writer and teacher for most of my career. Along with freelance writing, I’ve taught English to immigrants and refugees, reading and writing to native English speakers, and college classes ranging from community college to graduate school. My two professions complement each other — both depend on communicating ideas to meet the students or readers wherever they are.
Writing: I have written newspaper and magazine articles, book chapters, website content, grants, and organizational communications. I can take on any need to put words to paper or screen, and develop clear communication for any audience. See more at Selected Publications and Projects.
Oral Histories and Museum Exhibits: I love talking to people about their personal histories, researching their backgrounds, and telling their stories. Having taught and worked with many types of English speakers, I can communicate in clear and simple ways that make stories and ideas accessible to any audience.
Teaching: While teaching graduate students at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, I discovered that I loved helping students learn to express their ideas in writing. I have taught classes at community colleges and non-profit organizations, working with students from many different backgrounds, age groups, and prior education levels. I can help someone shape their writing so that their ideas are clear while keeping their voice intact, especially for non-native English speakers. I have helped many college applicants to tell their stories in their application essays.
Academic Advising:
As part of a partnership between the University of Washington School of Social Work and the Royal University in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (RUPP), I have advised faculty at the Department of Social Work at RUPP on methods for teaching university-level reading, writing, and study skills.
